When considering whether to allow your child to play a particular video game, you need to consider more than age-based rating. The rating is not always an accurate indicator of content. Some games classified by the video game industry as "Suitable for Everyone" contain potentially harmful content. Many games for "teenagers" are very violent. While playing a violent video game occasionally is unlikely to produce harmful long-term consequences, repeated exposure to violent entertainment media of any kind is a significant risk factor for subsequent aggression. Parents should carefully examine the content of video games before allowing their children to use them. There are thousands of video games available that are fun and educational. My own children have grown up with video games, but my wife and I have been very careful in projecting all of their games and in limiting the amount of time our children spend on them. Below are game sources that we have found helpful. But be sure to check the content of all the games allowed in your child's life, because even some educational games have content that you may find objectionable, particularly violent content.
